Happy New Year!

2011 was an exciting year, our first full year in business with plenty of ups and downs.  I’m pretty thrilled to be moving on to 2012. It signals a lot of important things to me: the ability to really work from home and support my family, the truth that my business is really a full fledged BUSINESS now, the chance to really track our growth since I have a whole year of numbers from last year to compare to.  Its exciting! And frightening. We’re already kind of outgrowing our office space (which we just moved into 6 months ago). I’m already seeing the need for an assistant at least 1-2 days per week all the time. I’m finding that I don’t really have time to focus on our retail shop, Mama Always Said. Its kind of awesome that we’re so busy!

I made plenty of personal resolutions for 2012, but I’m deciding to make a few important business ones as well. My goal is that these will also benefit my customers, whether you’re making accessories for your own loved ones and friends, or running other small businesses like my own.  I’d like to cover topics like getting great photos, having your own website, quitting your day job, financing your business, etc.  I’m hoping this will help others avoid some of the costly mistakes I made in my first year and a half (and there were plenty!)

So here goes:

1) I’d like to post at least every other day with helpful information, new products, great links, and shout outs. Wouldn’t it be fab if we all supported each other this year?

2) I try REALLY hard not to buy from big box stores. If I can get an item on Etsy or through a local group I will every time. I resolve to do even more of this in 2012, and to really sing the praises of the great local businesses I interact with. I truly believe small, local, stay  at home and mom-run businesses are becoming the backbone of our economy.

3) This year we’re hoping to really expand our product line. Right now we carry tons of silk flowers, rosettes, headbands, hats….but I’m hoping next year to find a good supplier for trims, elastics, feather products, and more.  I know there are tons of supply websites on the internet, but I’m hoping to really make my shop be HIGH END for not a lot of money.  I want to bring you the very best at fabulous prices.

4) Finally, I want to find a way to balance my time with my family and friends. This is a little more personal, but its super HARD to grow a business and not be a workaholic. I’m in the office A LOT and I can’t tell you how many times my fiancee cooked dinner this year (isn’t that amazing?!).  I’m hoping to work that out this year.  We’re getting married in June and I think it would be pretty durn cool if I had time to work out between now and then 😉
